An Introduction to Final Cut Pro X

This was my first attempt at using Final Cut Pro X. I found that this software was very confusing to start off with, as I had no experience. This image may look confusing but the bar with the blue background is the video footage as well as audio. The green bar below it is the audio you have chosen to use.

This is where you can select an image frame by frame to get a more in-depth preview of what you are looking for. I had to use this to match up the input audio to the footage chosen. This was to get the footage in sync with the song.
This is where you can cut a piece of the footage using SHIFT-B which means Blade. This tool can be used to cut a certain part of the footage when there is excess footage which isn't needed. I had to cut quite a bit of footage off due to there being too much and it caused the audio to not be in sync with the footage.
This a range of the features included within Final Cut Pro X. I used some of the transition effects as it made the video seem a bit more professional than a jump cut.

Research of Music Video 3: Geri Halliwell - It's Raining Men

The opening shot for this music video is a low angled close up of Geri's legs. This is an excellent image as it is exactly like Fame. This adds intertextuality to the music video.
This image has intertextuality with Flashdance as that had Jeniffer Lopez dance just like this within the final scenes. The use of a low angled shot adds mystery as well as replicating the scene from Flashdance.
This shot is a close up of Geri's torso and this is powerful as she is showing off her new physique since the break up of The Spice Girls as she was known as 'Fat Spice'. This has a powerful effect as it applies to Mulvey's 'Male Gaze' theory on representation.
This image shows the judges tapping their feet to the song that Geri's dancing to as well as referencing Flashdance by the judges showing appreciation to the song. The use of multiple references to Flashdance will bring in a wider target audience as fans of the film will want to see this version of the song and dance; this applies to theorist Bently.
This image applies to Goodwin as it creates a link between lyrics and the music video as at this part in the song it's the chorus. Multiple men run into the scene which works with the song. This lightens the moods into a more bubbly atmosphere, which would attract more of the target audience as it gives the impression of a teenage party.

This close up on her back is to show off her back tattoo. This could be a subliminal message to show that she's grown up and isn't the girl she used to be in The Spice Girls. The black costume that hardly covers her body are to show off her sexuality and she is showing off her new body to gain attention from the male audience and to become a role model or create aspirations for girls to look like her.
This is the first shot of Geri Halliwell's face and the shot type used is a close up, centre frame so you can see all the new style she's gone for as in The Spice Girls Geri was 'Ginger Spice' and this image is a reveal for her new look as she dyed her hair and also had it in a different style. This shot is great as it adds a comedic side as she messes up her routine and asks if she can try again, this adds an uplifting tone to the music video. This image could also apply to the theorist Mulvey as Geri's costume could be to appeal to the 'Male gaze'.
This image is a shot of the boys at the window and this again applies to Mulvey as the 'Male Gaze' is attracted as a crowd of men are waiting and watching. It is a close up of his face which shows true emotion in what the characters showing and feeling.

This is a medium shot which adds intertextuality to the song as it links to Fame, as the film uses the same font for the text. Geri used the word Famous instead of Fame, so it could either mean she is saying she's still or more famous than she was. Or she is trying to make the use of Fame hers by using Famous but with the same font and style. As this was a reference to the film, it creates cross-media convergence.
This last image is interesting as it applies to theorist Mulvey as she looks dressed for 'Male Gaze'. The dance routine is excellent as it applies to Goodwin also as the lyrics cohere to the video as Geri is surrounded by men as well as it pouring with rain. The fact it is pouring with rain adds the theory by Mulvey as her body would be shown in a way that would appeal to the male audience.

How this has influenced my creativity and planning:

  • The use of intertextuality of the film, Fame. I will plan to add any means of intertextuality within my music video.
  • How Geri made the song her own by using 'Famous' instead of 'Fame'. I like this as it gives the video and song its own branding and identity.
  • The link between the lyrics and song as this had Geri surrounded by men in the pouring rain when the song lyrics were 'It's raning men'.
