Elvis Presley

This is the homepage of Elvis Presley. Within this first page, you can see clear tabs to other sections of the website like; About, Music, Shop, Fans, and News. Also on the main tabs, there will be a drop down list showing greater detail for a more specific search. The star image created on this homepage is an action shot of the artist which would apply to theorist Winship's as he is made to look attractive for the female audience. As well as being a male icon as he was seen as a sex symbol. Also, the crowd in the background shows how popular the artist was by the atmosphere created by the fans.

The synergy created throughout this website is great as the masthead colour scheme is the same of Elvis's shirt, being the deep blue. There is even synergy between the background and the colour of the text, as the pale magnolia skyline cohesions with the colour of the sub-content.

This is the Bio tab of the web page and it has great synergy. The first one being the connection between the house style of the website, the same layout is used throughout as well as the same font and colours. The colour of the font on this page is excellent as the image was shown is in black and what and this compliments the use of white font for the information and masthead.

This is the Music tab within the homepage. As the artist we've chosen is deceased there are no live shows, but there are still shows playing his music even after death which shows a massive cult following for the artist and his work. There are tours playing all around the country with VIP packages but they are all sold out on each venue which shows the dedicated fans throughout multiple generations.

There are multiple cross-media promotions, as for example; on the homepage, there are three links to other sites for downloads and ticket bookings. There is also a tab which takes you to a separate website for Elvis merchandise. The shop sells a range of items from the branding of the star image from clothing to calendars.

The company that promotes Elvis's music is Elvis Presley Enterprises. It was created after his death by his father and family.
In
In 1954, Elvis began his singing career with the legendary Sun Records label in Memphis. In late 1955, his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor. By 1956, he was an international sensation. With a sound and style that uniquely combined his diverse musical influences and blurred and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time, he ushered in a whole new era of American music and popular culture.

There are multiple links to social media for this artist, even though he died way before the use of social media. This creates shortcuts for his fans to stay updated on any upcoming event.

Elvis Aaron Presley was born 8th January 1935, in Missispi, USA. On January 27th, 1956, he had a breakthrough with RCA 'Heartbreak Hotel. Elvis starred in 33 successful films which caused a breakthrough for him as he was later a well know 'sex symbol' throughout the generations. He was nominated for 14 Grammy nominations which lead to winning three. Elvis is regarded as one of the most influential pop-culture figures from the twentieth century. On the 16th of August, 1977, Elvis passed away in his Memphis home in Graceland.

How this has influenced my planning and creativity;

  • When I make my Digipak for our chosen artist, I will base my design on this as it is simple and elegant, as the idea of clear designed tabs helps to navigate with ease.
  • The idea of having a shop within the web page had influenced my creativity as I will try to include one within our media product.

Elvis Presley - Can't help falling in love

Wise men say only fools rush in
But I can't help falling in love with you
Shall I stay
Would it be a sin
If I can't help falling in love with you
Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can't help falling in love with you
Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can't help falling in love with you
For I can't help falling in love with you

Reasons, why this song was chosen for our final music video, was that this song is a personal favourite of both Charlie and I. The lyrics of this song can be made into many stories for us to work with as they produce a canvas for many ideas to create a meaningful story to suit them. The first idea for our video is a simple story showing the ever-growing love between a couple complimented with a narrative story using the emotive lyrics.

An Introduction to Final Cut Pro X

This was my first attempt at using Final Cut Pro X. I found that this software was very confusing to start off with, as I had no experience. This image may look confusing but the bar with the blue background is the video footage as well as audio. The green bar below it is the audio you have chosen to use.

This is where you can select an image frame by frame to get a more in-depth preview of what you are looking for. I had to use this to match up the input audio to the footage chosen. This was to get the footage in sync with the song.
This is where you can cut a piece of the footage using SHIFT-B which means Blade. This tool can be used to cut a certain part of the footage when there is excess footage which isn't needed. I had to cut quite a bit of footage off due to there being too much and it caused the audio to not be in sync with the footage.
This a range of the features included within Final Cut Pro X. I used some of the transition effects as it made the video seem a bit more professional than a jump cut.

Research of Music Video 3: Geri Halliwell - It's Raining Men

The opening shot for this music video is a low angled close up of Geri's legs. This is an excellent image as it is exactly like Fame. This adds intertextuality to the music video.
This image has intertextuality with Flashdance as that had Jeniffer Lopez dance just like this within the final scenes. The use of a low angled shot adds mystery as well as replicating the scene from Flashdance.
This shot is a close up of Geri's torso and this is powerful as she is showing off her new physique since the break up of The Spice Girls as she was known as 'Fat Spice'. This has a powerful effect as it applies to Mulvey's 'Male Gaze' theory on representation.
This image shows the judges tapping their feet to the song that Geri's dancing to as well as referencing Flashdance by the judges showing appreciation to the song. The use of multiple references to Flashdance will bring in a wider target audience as fans of the film will want to see this version of the song and dance; this applies to theorist Bently.
This image applies to Goodwin as it creates a link between lyrics and the music video as at this part in the song it's the chorus. Multiple men run into the scene which works with the song. This lightens the moods into a more bubbly atmosphere, which would attract more of the target audience as it gives the impression of a teenage party.

This close up on her back is to show off her back tattoo. This could be a subliminal message to show that she's grown up and isn't the girl she used to be in The Spice Girls. The black costume that hardly covers her body are to show off her sexuality and she is showing off her new body to gain attention from the male audience and to become a role model or create aspirations for girls to look like her.
This is the first shot of Geri Halliwell's face and the shot type used is a close up, centre frame so you can see all the new style she's gone for as in The Spice Girls Geri was 'Ginger Spice' and this image is a reveal for her new look as she dyed her hair and also had it in a different style. This shot is great as it adds a comedic side as she messes up her routine and asks if she can try again, this adds an uplifting tone to the music video. This image could also apply to the theorist Mulvey as Geri's costume could be to appeal to the 'Male gaze'.
This image is a shot of the boys at the window and this again applies to Mulvey as the 'Male Gaze' is attracted as a crowd of men are waiting and watching. It is a close up of his face which shows true emotion in what the characters showing and feeling.

This is a medium shot which adds intertextuality to the song as it links to Fame, as the film uses the same font for the text. Geri used the word Famous instead of Fame, so it could either mean she is saying she's still or more famous than she was. Or she is trying to make the use of Fame hers by using Famous but with the same font and style. As this was a reference to the film, it creates cross-media convergence.
This last image is interesting as it applies to theorist Mulvey as she looks dressed for 'Male Gaze'. The dance routine is excellent as it applies to Goodwin also as the lyrics cohere to the video as Geri is surrounded by men as well as it pouring with rain. The fact it is pouring with rain adds the theory by Mulvey as her body would be shown in a way that would appeal to the male audience.

How this has influenced my creativity and planning:

  • The use of intertextuality of the film, Fame. I will plan to add any means of intertextuality within my music video.
  • How Geri made the song her own by using 'Famous' instead of 'Fame'. I like this as it gives the video and song its own branding and identity.
  • The link between the lyrics and song as this had Geri surrounded by men in the pouring rain when the song lyrics were 'It's raning men'.

Research or Music Video 2: The Lumineers - Ophelia

The opening shot for this music video is the simple shot of the name of the band, which is in their signature font center frame. Then, it has the name of the song below. This is good as there is no music in the back ground so it pulls focus on the text on screen. The editing used on this opening shot is that it fades to black to the next scene. This is good as it is simple but effective as it isn't a rough jump cut, it eases in the video which makes the transition smooth.

This next image after the fade is a jump cut to where the image is a studio shot of the band centre frame with studio lights in the background. This is good as it makes the band seem mysterious which represents the genre as its indie-rock and the studio lights behind them means you can't see their faces which give an ominous feeling to the video. This is also good as it has influenced my creativity as I can easily replicate this shot in my music video.

The image on the right is good as the shot type is a close up, centre frame of the singer. This also breaks the representation of the mysterious look as the camera pans in and you can see the singers face with the studio lights isn't as covering on their faces. You can see that the costume used in this music video represent the genre. The genre being a mix between country and indie rock and the singer's costume is formal, which suits the county genre and then the formal, but shaggy hair style suits the indie rock genre. The editing used within the scene is that when the singer walks forward towards the camera, he walks with the beat of the foot drum.

The image to the left is a close-up shot of another band member. This is a good image as it's a close up, centre frame image which can be easily replicated in my video. The costume in the shot is good, as its formal and the expression on her face shows true passion and love for her music. That can also be represented by her red lipstick, which is symbolic of passion and love. This could also apply to a journalist, Mulvey as her costume and make-up could be to be for the 'male gaze'.

This image to the right is a side view of the last band member and it's a centre frame. His costume in this shot is again, represents the genre of country and indie rock because he's wearing a fedora with a button up formal shirt which represents the country genre. The editing in this shot is that the camera pans around all the members then finishes on this shot.

The camera in this shot is panning round and this shot is good as it shows the representation of genre as the props used in this shot is an action shot of a piano which represents the country genre. The costume in this shot is also a representation of the country genre as his sleeves are rolled up on his formal shirt. This image has influenced my creativity as its an action shot as well as a close up, which I can easily replicate it in my music video.

This image to the right is a location show which is a change compared to the studio shot which all the other shots are. The shot type in this image is a left of frame shot of the lead singer walking in an ally. This shot shows the costume the lead singer is wearing and that represents the genre by the button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled up, this represents that he is confident and relaxed as his shirt has the top buttons undone. This represents the indie rock genre as he doesn't look bothered, which is traditional for the genre. The editing in this image is that the camera is tracking and he is singing into camera, which represents a more personal experience as its as if he's singing to the viewer.

This image is a tracking shot of the lead singer, dancing to the beat which is as if his foot steps are the beat of the song. The setting in this video is that the environment is depressing and gloomy, which sets a melancholy tone to the video but the dancing and the beat of the song uplifts the mood. This has influenced my creativity as the subliminal meanings within the music video, much like this one with the weather setting a tone to the video.

This image is a fantastic image, as it has a teaser of the band's upcoming album in the background as their album cover is the lead singer. The shot type is a location, centre frame of the lead singer resting on the advertisement of their album. This has influenced my creativity and planning as I love the idea of having the album cover within the music video. Also having the singer looking away from the camera as that represents that its a story and not a music video.

On this last shot, it shows the lead singer dancing to the beat which represents that he is causing the beat and rhythm. This shot type is a location shot which is a center frame which pulls focus from the surrounding area to the lead singer. The editing done in this image is tracking of the lead singer down a street while he dances and sings into the camera. His dance slows to a steady pace as the song slows but then picks up when his movement gets faster.
How this has influenced my creativity and planning;

  •  I like the idea of the use of tracking in my music video.
  • The use of artifical light as it produces a pull focus on whoever or whatever it's on.
  • The link between the beat of the song and video as it makes it more personal.

Research of Music Video 1: Mumford & Sons - I Will Wait

The opening shot for this music video starts with a location shot of a side of a road on looking some rocks then text fades onto the screen which uses alliteration. The text shows the genre used as it is old fashioned and unique which suits the chosen genre. The editing used in the scene is a fade from a plain song

The image above is an excellent one as it has the band playing to the right of frame  with the lights focusing on them and to the left it has spare equipment and instruments which is in the dark as it pulls focus from the band playing. I think this image is very good as it makes it more personal as it shows the messiness and clutter of what its like behind stage. You can see the costume worn by the band and this clearly represents the genre they are as one of the band members is playing a double bass which represents an county genre, which they are, but also a vintage twist as they are wearing suit vests and shirts.

This image to the left is good as it shows the video is as if its from the bands point of view as it shows the audience, which makes it more personal, but it also shows a shot the band in action which does draw focus on the on band as they are centre frame in a row. The costumes used are perfect for the genre as they give the impression of a county/vintage style as the lead singer is wearing a waist coat. The lead singer is more important in this image as he stands out from the rest as his costume is more significant than the rest as he is wearing a waist coat and is centre frame. The props used by the band are perfect for the genre as the use of the double bass and the banjo represents the county/vintage style.
This image on the left is of the presumably lead singer as his costume is more significant than the rest. He is centre frame in this image which represents the dominance of being the lead as no other band member is in the shot. His costume is good as it represents the genre of county/vintage style with the waist coat and the props used as well, like the acoustic guitar which represents the county genre.
This image to the left is good as the shot is an action shot of the lead singer in centre frame with some studio lights in the background which would draw focus on him and nothing else. This image is also good as it shows the passion the band member has for the music they play, this is shown by the facial expression he has.

This image to the right is a great image as shows the representation of the genre perfectly as it has the county and vintage look with the worn look on the double bass. As well as the worn look giving that old county feel, it also shows the passion they have as the double bass has been used so much that its worn down which is perfect. The instrument represents vintage as it has that old fashioned look to the instrument as well as the use of the double bass which isn't really used in modern music, which breaks conventions. You can clearly see the use on this instrument as its only the left side that is worn and the comparison of looks between the left and right side is greatly different. Overall this image is perfect as its got such fine detail which has a massive impact on representations of genre.
The image to left is good as its a left of frame action shot of a band member laughing, with to the right it shows the audience. Which represents that the video is personal as it shows that the band love what they do and have fun. This image is very good as it can be easily replicated, as I wouldn't be able to get a shot of the full audience which is in the video but this image only has a couple of the audience in it.

Before this image is shown a brief montage of images is made which leads to this. This is a location image which introduces the band and the song in their trademark font which then fades with the beginning of the song. The location of this shot is an urban location which gives the impression that the video will be a location video with a range of shots but the next seen shows that the video is actually a studio shot of a live performance of the band. My video could be filmed in a similar location to this. The editing used in this scene is a fade of the band and title of the song then another fade of the text then a cut to a studio shot.

The shot type in this image is a canted shot which shows the audience and the band when playing. This is a great angle as it shows the audience and that represents what the genre of the band is by looking at the audience. This is a studio shot which is possible for my video.

This shot is a wide angle shot, and is used to show the sheer size of the audience of the band and the image is also an action shot of the band. The whole video is an action shot as its a live performance. Although this shot is good, I cannot use it in my video as it is a wide shot of the audience and I wouldn't be able to get that size audience in any of my shots.

How this has influenced my creativity

This music video by Mumford & Sons has greatly influenced my creativity and planning as the use of fine details. For example; the look of the props can add a massive impact when representing the chosen genre as well as the studio shots. This has also influenced my creativity as the range of shots used like showing a part of the audience instead of all as it would be difficult to replicate it.
